Chapter Six

“What in the world were you thinking?” Rowan yanked the flannel shirt over his head as Julian kicked off his sneakers. The bathroom filled with billowing steam as she tossed the soaked shirt aside. He was still shivering, his teeth chattering as she ripped the belt from around his waist.

“Hold on,” he stammered as her fingers hovered at the snap of his jeans. “That water was really cold, honey. Give a guy a break.”

“Oh, for God’s sake,” she spat, turning to shut off the taps of the enormous clawfoot tub. “Just get in.”

She truly feared his body temperature might have gotten low enough to cause harm. He stepped into the tub, a thankful moan rumbling through his chest as he immersed his body in the steamy water. Kneeling by the tub, she grabbed a sea sponge, and dipped it into the water. Drizzling the warm water over his head, she breathed a sigh of relief as color flooded back into his cheeks.

“Who is that kid?” he finally asked as she continued to dip the sponge, and squeeze water over his head and shoulders.

“He’s our delivery boy at the shop. He’s a sweet, shy boy who is now probably reevaluating his decision to work for us.”

Rolling his head against the back of the tub, he opened one eye as the corners of his lips lifted. “I doubt that. Even after my brothers manhandled him, he still looked at you like an angel come down,” he chuckled. “The kid is in love, Rowan.” Closing his eyes, he drew another deep breath. “Can’t say I blame him.”

Dropping the sponge into the water, she scooted back to rest against the vanity. Her heart was still slamming against her chest, her wet hands trembling as she yanked a towel from a bar. “This isn’t the time for jokes, Julian.”

“I’m not joking.” He looked over at her again. “I clearly recall what sort of reaction a boy his age had around you when you were a girl his age. I can only imagine what sort of fuel for the fire the whole older woman aspect adds.” His gaze smoothed over her. “You’re even more beautiful now.”

Her heart lurched again, her knees wobbling as she tried to stand. “Soak for a while. I’ll go warm up some of that soup for you.”

She was taken completely off guard when his hand shot out, and twisted in the front of her T-shirt. Water sloshed all over the floor as she tumbled into his arms. Her thighs straddled his, her palms slapping against his muscular chest as she gasped and blinked water from her eyes.

“Julian!” she wailed, struggling to sit up.

His hand tangled in the hair at the back of her head, his mouth covering hers before she could spout the scathing remark forming on her lips. Then there was only heat and hunger as he dragged her under a firestorm of feeling. Her fingers shaped the roped muscles of his shoulders, her nails scoring the slick flesh of his chest.
